About one third of our population is familiar with smoking. In fact, many people claim to quit smoking at least once in their life. However, every second person ends up indulging it again. Still, many have different reasons to continue smoking, some to reduce stress, while others make it a habit. Then again, others admit it to be an addiction.
Real Research — the online survey app, launched a survey on smoking to gather public opinion on the matter. It inquired about one’s favorite cigarette brand. Moreover, it asked why people start smoking. In addition, it also asked respondents ‘what is the reason to quit smoking’? Here are the results.

58.98% Said They Are No Strangers To Smoking
To begin, the survey asked its respondents whether they smoke. In reply, 58.98% said ‘yes’ and 41.02% said ‘no’. Following this, the survey asked the respondents when they start smoking? A majority (50.76%) said they started smoking in their 20s. The rest responded as such, 10s (34.85%), 30s (5.43%), 70s (4.27%) 60s (1.57%) respectively.
Next, the survey asked another question, why did they start smoking?. A whopping 43.95% said they learned to smoke during military service. Likewise, 17.44% said ‘to relieve stress’ and 12.12% said it seemed cool. In addition, 9.70% said to hang out with friends and 6.91% said they were curious about it.
Marlboro Took the Lead for Favorite Cigarette Brand
Following after, the survey asked respondents about their favorite brands. Responses are as follows: Marlboro (38.65%), Raison (8.93%), Camel (6.60), Mild Seven (6.21), Dunhill (5.16%), Parliament (3.38%), and Vogue (3.12%).
Next, respondents answered about how much they smoke in a day. On this, 53.21% said less than 5 cigarettes, 18.10% said, 6-10 cigarettes, and 10.12% said 11-20 cigarettes a day. Lastly, 6.04% responded 21-25 cigarettes and 7.16% said more than 30 cigarettes a day.
Around 10% Started Smoking While Hanging Out With Friends
Similarly, the survey asked if respondents ever tried to quit smoking. In response, 79.75% said ‘yes’ and 20.25% said ‘no’. Accordingly, the survey asks what triggered you to try quitting smoking? Here, 29.54% said it is for their own health, 11.86% said due to an increase in cigarette price, and 8.74% left it due to lack of smoking space. On the other hand, 8.80% left smoking due to childbirth and 7.74% said due to hygiene issues.
To conclude, the survey asked respondents when do they feel the urge to smoke? Many (37.30%) said when they woke up, whereas, 11.67% said after having a meal. Similarly, 10.95% said while consuming alcohol and 6.04% said when feeling drowsy. Likewise, 5.01% said while in the toilet, 4.53% said they have an urge when they see someone smoking, 2.87% want to smoke during a traffic jam and 2.13% said while craving munchies.
