Racial Discriminataion at the work place has been a consistent part of our society. Some face it more than others. Especially, Asians have faced racial discrimination in the workplace while working in foreign countries. Furthermore, these stereotypical behaviors affect a healthy work environment and the productivity of employees. It is the employers’ responsibility to make the work environment healthy. Workplace race discrimination disrupts a productive workplace.

Accordingly, Real research — the online survey app conducted a survey on racial discrimination in the workplace to understand the behavioral patterns of racism in the workplace. It focused on questions like what kind of ‘race discrimination at work employees face’. Moreover, it centers on workplace discrimination and how authorities deal with such issues.

51.85% Have Never Faced Racial Discrimination in the Workplace

Responding to the first question, 48.15% have faced racial discrimination in the workplace while 51.85% say they have never faced racial discrimination at work.

Following this, the next question in the survey asked what kind of racist behavior they have faced. 18.54% say ‘stereotyping due to my race’, 15.33% say ‘interference with work performance’, and 9.20% say ‘unfair criticism’. Likewise, 5.05% chose ‘verbal bullying’, 4.27% chose ‘ostracism’ and 3.88% say ‘overlooked for promotion’.

In addition, the survey asks what have they done to protect those who face racial discrimination at work. In response, 24.83% say ‘I have never witnessed it at the workplace’ while 23.77% say they complained to the management and 14.35% say they made people sign petitions against racial discrimination. Also, 14.85% said they did nothing while 6.73% called them out for their wrong behavior.

18.24% Say Supervisors Carry Out Racial Discrimination at Work

Furthermore, the survey asked ‘who faces more racial discrimination at work’. In reply, 24.38% say females while 24.52% say males. In addition, 10.99% said transgender, and 8.37% said, Intersex. Lastly, 26.57% said others.

Moreover, the survey asked the respondents ‘who mostly carry out racist comments in workplace’. Answers are as follows: The owner (18.54%), Supervisor (18.24%), Colleagues (15.72%), Senior management (9.88%), and Clients (4.76%).

Next, the survey asks how are racist comments directed? Here, 26.04% say racist comments are intentionally directed towards people. Meanwhile, 18.29% said passive-aggressively, and 12.64% said anonymously. Lastly, 11.94% say unconsciously. 

35.81% Say Racial Discrimination in The  Workplace Affects Their Salary

When asked if their workplace has a policy against racism, 48.71% said ‘yes’ and 51.29% said ‘no’. Following this question, the next survey respondents reveal their level of satisfaction with the policy. To specify, 27.68% say they are extremely satisfied while 24.42% say they are satisfied. In contrast, 14.38% are dissatisfied and 33.52% have never experienced racism.

Furthermore, the survey asked if the management at their workplace take appropriate action against racism reports. In reply, 31.15% said never and 24.37% said rarely. Likewise, 17.07% said occasionally and 8.62% said frequently. Lastly, 18.79% responded with always.

The survey then asks if racism has ever affected their salary as an employee. On this, 35.81% said ‘yes’ and 28.66% said ‘no’. Lastly, the survey asked respondents if the diversity of various races in the workplace lessens racism. A majority of 38.05% said ‘yes’, while 18.98% said ‘no’.
