During Covid-19, Tiktok became a widely popular. With TikTok, #BookTok emerged as a sprawling community with a hashtag that has over 64.3 billion views and counting. With this in mind, a BookTok book club on TikTok was formed to capitalize on the long-standing love for literature. This is where users mix the traditional joy of reading with creative visuals and music. This resulted in the continuous growth and popularity of #BookTok in the TikTok community and society of creative people sharing a love of reading.

To seek opinions on #BookTok, Real Research, an online survey app, launched a survey on TikTok expanding into ‘BookTok’. The survey aims to determine how many people participate in BookTok and whether they think this expansion will increase the number of book lovers on the platform or in general. Here are the results.

Respondents on Their Love of Reading Books

The survey on TikTok Expanding into ‘BookTok’ started by asking if respondents read books. The survey responses revealed that 45.18% said ‘yes, always’ and 23.99% replied ‘yes, when I have time.’ Meanwhile, 15.79% said ‘no, I do not read books,’ and 15.03% said ‘no, I have no time to read.’

Next, the survey on TikTok Expanding into ‘BookTok’ asks respondents how they prefer to read books. A majority of 57.83% like to read physical books (paperback, hardcover), 22.71% read eBooks (PDF, Kindle), and 19.46% read audiobooks.

Furthermore, the survey asks, “How often do you read books?” The survey respondents on reading books said ‘once a week’ (51.9%), ‘once a month’ (16.91%), and ‘once a year’ (12.48%).

Moreover, the survey revealed that 37% of respondents like genres of ‘Mystery’ in books. 9.43% prefer ‘Thriller’, 9.18% would read ‘Self-Help’ books, and 7.98% love to read the ‘Romantic’ book genre.

The survey on TikTok expanding into ‘BookTok’ asks respondents if they have a TikTok account. Survey responses reveal that 61.39% have a TikTok account, whereas 28.61% do not.

The survey asked respondents if they were aware of Tiktok expanding into BookTok, a book club of sorts. 48.05% knew all about the BookTok book club on TikTok. On the contrary, 26.23% were unaware. Meanwhile, 25.72% only heard about it but didn’t know any details.

When the survey respondents were asked how likely a digital social media platform would be effective in encouraging readers to read more, 35.74% said ‘highly likely’, and 21.79% were neutral. The other 19.22% said it’s ‘likely’, 11.68% think it’s unlikely, and 11.57% feel ‘highly unlikely’ to encourage more readers.

The Public’s Verdict on BookTok Book Club on TikTok

The survey asked respondents’ opinions on the most significant impact of book reviews on the TikTok Book Club! #BookTok. 35.77% said it encourages readers to read more books, and 15.17% said it connects with other readers worldwide. 11.3% replied that #BookTok exposes new book genres, 10.44% felt it expands the book reading community, and 9.91% thought it gives global recognition to authors.

According to the TikTok Expanding into ‘BookTok’ survey, majorly 45.6% follow all #BookToks, 28.92% do not watch any, whereas 25.48% have seen some BookToks.

Lastly, the survey asks if they would participate in activities organized by TikTok or BookTok in the future. 41.77% said yes, they looked forward to it, 20.54% were not sure, 20% were eager and wanted to start reading books, and 17.61% said no.
