Meet Taghi Askari, the 100-year-old Iranian diver who performed at the 2024 World Championships in Doha, Qatar. A remarkable man whose love for sport has spanned over seven decades!

When Askari first participated in the Asian Games in 1951, he won silver and bronze medals. Askari will be the oldest competitor in the World Aquatics Masters Championships this year.

Askari’s first encounter with diving was at a swimming pool near his childhood home in Iran. Askari said, “For me, I have had a love of diving since I was a teenager until today. I have always loved diving. Nothing has changed between 1951 and now, except my performance!”

The last championships Askari participated in while competing at a national level were when he was 41 years old. At the time, he won a gold medal and bid farewell to the sport. The Iranian will be among the competitors at the World Aquatics Masters Championships. 

The World Aquatics Masters is open to athletes aged 25 and above and includes swimming, diving, artistic swimming, water polo, and open-water swimming. The event will be held from February 23 to March 3, 2024.
